Gilligan, Andrew

Gilligan, Andrew
(1968– )
The journalist best known for his May 2003 report about a British Government briefing paper on Iraq and weapons of mass destruction (the September Dossier) while working for BBC Radio 4‘s Today programme as its defence and diplomatic correspondent. He claimed that the British Government had deliberately exaggerated the military capabilities of Iraq in order to justify going to war with the country. In particular, he claimed on air that Alastair Campbell had deliberately ‘sexed up’ the governmental document which contained the claim that Iraq could deploy biological weapons within 45 minutes of an order to do so. In the Hutton Report, the Government was largely cleared of any wrongdoing and Gilligan’s central allegations concerning the role of Campbell were adjudged to have been unfounded.
